Meet the dyer!

My name is Shannon, you can call me Shan! I am the owner and dyer for Forty Winks Fibers. I recently finished my PhD in Cell & Developmental Biology, and I am now living in New York City working and doing all the wooly things I can get my hands on!

I have been knitting and crocheting since I was a child; my grandmother inspired quite the lust for fiber-related hobbies! From knitting and sewing, to embroidery and cross stitch, she taught me so many wonderful things. Flash forward to 2022, in the midst of a hurricane which wiped out our electricity for about a week, I finally picked up a dye pan and tried my hand at dying my own yarn. I’ve never looked back!
I find so much inspiration in life through color, everywhere you look there is a new color scheme to dissect. I take a lot of inspiration from the books, art, games, and places I've been! Life is so fun viewed through the lens of color, and I aim to translate my appreciation for color to my dye work. My goal is for my colorways to provide a sense of whimsy or nostalgia, to feel familiar somehow.
Alongside my hand dyed yarns, I carry a range of hand dyed combed top. A new venture for the business has been processed fleece; I really enjoy working with small farmers across the US/Canada to curate a selection of the best raw fleeces I can find. From there, I sell a range of fleece products. I sell washed, washed + picked, and washed + picked + prepped fiber, including batts and hand combed tops. I love engaging with other crafters on fleece work, as it creates such an appreciation for the yarns we use, as well as the shepherds who produce it!

Whether you are looking for a sweater quantity or a fun OOAK, I hope you are able to find something that gives you creative inspiration here at Forty Winks Fibers! Thank you for being here!
